Annual Toy Run

November 30, 2009

Yesterday, I attended my first Toy Run ®.  For those of you who do not know what this is, it is an annual event organised by the biking community.  Bikers from all backgrounds, groups and “gangs” get together all over South Africa and take part in a mass ride, bringing with them toys for underprivileged children.  I attended the Pretoria run that ran from the Kolonade to the Carousel.  I was in the car with my son, so I drove from home directly to the Carousel and was not part of the mass ride.  I had been told that seeing so many bikes was quite spectacular so I wanted to photograph their arrival.

I was not disappointed.  What an amazing experience.  The diversity in the groups of people there was mind boggling.  What caught my attention were the “tough” gangs, who arrived looking very intimidating.  Many of them were highly tattooed, some carrying weapons quite openly.  They were really rough looking characters and in normal day to day life I’d probably make a point of avoiding them. These “tough” guys all arrived laden with soft toys either cable tied to their bikes or to themselves.  Some of them were almost hidden behind the soft toys, that you had to look very carefully to see if there was indeed a biker, or if the teddy bear was riding and being operated by remote control.  It was almost laughable looking at the contradiction – a tattooed tough guy, wearing a bandanna, with a cigarette and a beer in one hand and an enormous cuddly toy in the other.  The sheer number of bikes and people in attendance was almost overwhelming.  But what touched me the most, was the fact that all these people, from such diverse backgrounds and cultures, could put all those differences aside to come together in support of the underprivileged children in our country.

I am not a “biker chick” by any stretch of the imagination.  I did attend the Oyster Festival with some friends in the Harley Davidson Club in Cape Town a few years back.  I enjoyed riding on the bike and seeing the spectacular views around the coast.  I’ve done it, it was great, but I do not feel drawn to be on the back of a bike.  However, the thrill of standing on the side of the road and hearing the roar of those engines, and being in the midst of such camaraderie is indescribably awesome.  I literally had “goose bumps” when the bikes were coming in in their droves.  If you only look at my make up, hair style and what I was wearing, I should have been a total outcast among the biker community.  Yet I was made to feel so welcome.  I don’t think that I have ever been in such a large crowd and spoken to so many people that I’ve never met before and felt so “at home”.  These rough & tough biker guys were my knights in shining armour at one point, but I’ll tell you about that in another post.

My brother and his wife ride for the CMA, and since they started riding I have been gaining more tolerance and respect for the biking community.  Yesterday however, just blew me out of the water and I have a new found respect for ALL bikers.  Of course you have those that are inconsiderate on the roads and make us car drivers mad.  But there are people driving cars who make me just as angry.

I have always believed the old adage “do not judge a book by its cover” has merit.  At the Toy Run that message was made real to me in a whole new way.  Give people a chance, they might just surprise you.

Here are a few photographs taken on the day. The rest I will post to Flickr and my Facebook Fans page for you to view there.

I have been feeling particularly miserable the past few days with my sinus infection.  It is something I have suffered with most of my life, and for the most part it is not a problem.  Sometimes it does get really bad, and then I suffer the most excruciating headaches.  My face feels like it is under pressure, because it is, and my eyes feel like they’ll explode out of their sockets.  I won’t go into detail about the other side effects.  Driving is totally out of the question when I have these headaches as it affects my sight and my balance.  So I am confined to home.  Thank goodness for social networking like twitter.  I think without my friends there I would have gone totally insane the past few days.

Before this infection started I bought a new bird feeder and installed it in a tree in my garden.  This afternoon while sitting on the stoep and feeling rather sorry for myself, I noticed that there were quite a few birds at the feeder.  Here are some shots of the birds at the feeder.

Top birds are male Red Bishop’s in their breeding colours.  The bottom shot are Cape Sparrows.

When I went back to my room to download the photos I found the kitten asleep on my bed.  He has a tendency to suck his tongue like a baby would suck a dummy.  It really is quite sweet to see, so I thought I’d share this with you too.

Once my head has cleared I hope to share more interesting snippets with you.  I’m afraid that this is a true reflection of my rather sad and boring life the past few days.

My New Blog

November 26, 2009

After much debate and discussion with friends, I have finally decided to start my own blog.  I will attempt to share with you, events that make up the hectic circus that is my life.  I shall also share a rant or 2 (probably more) and possibly even make you laugh on occasion.  I am new to this whole blogging world so please feel free to offer advice, words of wisdom and guidance.  If you wish to voice your displeasure at something I have said, please be nice.  If you are nasty to me, I probably won’t like you very much anymore.

With all that said I guess it is now time to say a few “Thank you’s”.  Thank you Ian for always humouring me when I ask the complicated questions and your endless patience in teaching me to be self sufficient with things “IT”.  As a self confessed “control freak” I can attest that holding the “reigns” to my website & blog satisfies my addiction and has effected a thoroughly frustrating yet strangely satisfying learning curve.   Thank you Andre for helping me to make sense of the blogging and search engine stuff, and helping me to get it up and running.  Your abundant knowledge of all things IT and photographic never cease to amaze me, and I’m eternally grateful that you share your “power” so freely.  The ability that you both have to “dumb” everything down so that I can understand it, is a testament to your superior intelligence.  I am humbled in the company of such “awesomeness”.

I am unsure of how often I should post, but I know that if I am too long in adding posts, one of you will surely rattle my cage and tell me to get a move on.  But for now, getting this far is a major achievement.  Especially in light of the fact that I currently have the most horrific sinus infection and this entire post and set up has been done with the assistance of Schedule 3 drugs (red & green are my favourite colours today)
