A New(ish) Restaurant

July 26, 2010

Latest news …. L has bought a restaurant.  Yes, apparently single handedly running a golf course, guest house and lodge is not enough work & stress ;)  There is a restaurant/tea room/curio/cafe type shop in town.  He saw a For Sale sign and bought it.  No I’m not exaggerating, he saw the sign, stopped and phoned the guy and 24 hours later it was his.  It has a LOT of potential and I have no doubt that in his capable hands it will do extremely well.  At the moment it is called “Kom Kletzke” but will soon be renamed (and thankfully repainted) to “Golf Club Restaurant & Shoppe”  I have to add that the “Shoppe” part was my idea since they will still be selling curios as there seems to be a demand for it. :P

They make the most divine home made pies, pizzas and scones.  Lina and Gladys are amazing.  They promised to teach me so I can also be an awesome domestic goddess at home.  I’m not sure who is going to be the taste tester though.

So anyhow, this is what it looks like at the moment.  The “quaint” interior decorations will remain, but the neon pink and purple will be painted over with something less offensive to those with a hangover :P Outside View

Sunset through the tree

July 11, 2010

Here in Badplaas we lose the sun fairly early in winter, although it only gets dark about and hour and a half later.  This is because it disappears behind the mountain that is really close to us.  I’m always quite sad because the chance of taking any great sunset shots or warm silhouettes is near impossible.  Last night I looked outside the bedroom window and noticed the sun shining through the tree.  I decided to try and get some “sunset” shots and this is what I came up with.

Bump on a Golf Course

July 4, 2010

Tamiya won a weekend’s free accommodation at Badplaas Golf Club Guest House & Lodge via Facebook and Twitter.  She is 7 months pregnant with her second baby, so she could not join her hubby and friends playing golf.  We decided that since she was here we may as well do a “bump shoot”.  She has not done a maternity shoot before and I have not done a maternity shoot in veld surroundings, so it was a first for us both.

Here is a sample of what we took, I hope you like them Tamiya.  I’ll get the cd to you in the week so that your mom can see the photos while she is visiting you.

I loved spending time with you and getting to know you.  I really hope that once #plusone is born you can make it out here again and this time enjoy a round of golf.

Frost in Badplaas

June 18, 2010

My son has always seen frost on TV or out the car window, but he has never had a chance to play in it and feel it.  Yesterday morning there was the first frost here in Badplaas.  He was terribly excited when I showed him and asked if he could go and feel it.  I don’t think he realised just HOW cold it would be when I told him it is very cold.

I struggled to decide which photos to show you as they each tell a different side of what he experienced, so here are many photos.

On Saturday the Highveld Golf Association League Golf Championships were held at Badplaas Golf Club, who are also the sponsors of this competition .  The course is in outstanding condition and the weather was warm and sunny – perfect golfing conditions.

The match between Middleburg and Volksrust was closely contested.  On the 17th they were all square and it came down to a nail biting finish on the 18th.  Volksrust manage to clinch the match and are now the champions.

In the veterans match Middleburg played against Greenside.  Greenside were victorious.

It was a great day, and the hosting by Leon Rorich at Badplaas Golf Club was impeccable as always.

A Boy and His Cat

June 11, 2010

The weather here in Badplaas has been so fantastic, we’ve really been very lucky.  The other day we decided to sit outside while having our lunch.  I could not help smiling and feeling all warm and fuzzy watching my son and his cat. There is this quiet contentment that has come over them both.  Living on a golf course is in such stark contrast to living in our little townhouse, surrounded by burglar bars, security gates and teeny tiny gardens.  I love watching them romp and play and just totally enjoy being alive.

On a really misty morning at Badplaas I went out and got these shots.  I was fascinated with all the water droplets on the leaves and plants.

There is so much beauty around us and often we just don’t take the time to see it.  Here are some shots that I took at Badplaas in really miserable weather.  If it wasn’t raining it was drizzling or misty.  Definitely not outdoor weather unless you’re a duck or a frog.  But I braved the elements and here’s some of what I came up with.

The sun tried really hard to break through the clouds and was making the most beautiful patterns in the clouds and giving a really eerie light

There was a Kingfisher in a tree outside the club house that we determined to get a meal – even in the pouring rain! If I am not mistaken, I think this is a Brownhooded Kingfisher.

Fun in the Sun

April 10, 2010

It has been raining quite a lot at Badplaas recently. Not great weather for children to be playing outside. So you can imagine that when the sun eventually did come out (just barely), it was all systems into overdrive to get little legs some exercise.

My boy had a wonderful time expelling excess energy and I used the opportunity to practice panning and focusing “on the go”
