An Early Birthday Party

April 15, 2010

My friend Sally is leaving on Tuesday and moving to Cape Town.  I am very sad that she is leaving as our friendship has grown so much and so quickly over the past few months.  I will miss our chats and the openness we share.

I am not the only one who will miss her.  My son was devastated when he heard that his friend (Sally’s daughter) is moving to Cape Town.  He cannot understand why she is moving now.  She is supposed to attend his birthday party in a few weeks time.

Sally and I had planned a visit for this afternoon, and so it happened that we had an impromtu “birthday party” so that my boy could have his friends attend.  The kids absolutely loved it and they played wonderfully together as they always do.

Here are some photographs of our time together today:

Fun in the Sun

April 10, 2010

It has been raining quite a lot at Badplaas recently. Not great weather for children to be playing outside. So you can imagine that when the sun eventually did come out (just barely), it was all systems into overdrive to get little legs some exercise.

My boy had a wonderful time expelling excess energy and I used the opportunity to practice panning and focusing “on the go”

On Friday morning, after much stressing, worrying and frustration at having to wait longer than anticipated, I finally got my engagement ring.  Mr “Diamaond Merchant” delivered it to me around 11h30.  I was so excited, and couldn’t wait to get to Badplaas so that I could officially “get” my ring and wear it.  You see I am rather old fashioned that way.  In my mind the ring actually belongs to Mr Wonderful until he gives it to me and puts it on my finger.

When I arrived there, my darling fiance was working on the golf course as usual.  He met us at the club house to unload the restaurant supplies and club car batteries that I had brought with me.  I tried to give him the box with the ring, but he was on a mission to get all the other things off loaded.  Once that was done he eventually took the box from me and inspected the ring while I went and parked my car.  As I got out of my car he was walking towards me, all hot and sweaty from working in the sun.  Then takes my hand, stares deep into my eyes and says “My Skat ek is BAIE lief vir jou, sal jy asseblief met my trou?”  Of course I said yes and he put the ring on my finger.  This may not sound like much romance to you, but it meant the world to me.  The fact that he actually asked me to marry him is a BIG DEAL.  And to wrap up this momentous occasion, he then kissed me, tossed the empty box in my car and said “Kom ons gaan drink ‘n dop, ek is f@kken dors”.

That evening we had our own little cheese & wine snack party.  I drank the entire bottle of champagne because he does not like it.  It was a most wonderful evening.  Here are a few photos.

For those of you who were guessing on a previous blog post as to which ring I’d chosen, this is the “Olivia” style ring.  Well done to Jeanette, Angel and Catherine who got it right.

MeeA’s Maternity Shoot

March 6, 2010

This morning I met up with @MeeAParkins for her maternity shoot. We didn’t really plan this, it was a last minute almost joking kind of arrangement.  When I was in Cape Town I did @acidicice maternity shoot and 24 hours later #babyice was born.  MeeA has been complaining for some time now that she is walking like a cowboy and it is time for #babyparkins to arrive.  I jokingly said perhaps I should do the shoot because I need the practice and she’ll probably go into labour when I’m done with her :P

I’m so pleased she took the offer, because we had a most wonderful time and a good few laughs.  It was also wonderful to get to know her better.  Here are some shots from this morning.  I hope you like them Meea.

Over Valentines weekend I was in Badplaas with my beloved @rorieg.  The previous week @andrevr was in Pretoria on business.  He missed his flight back to Cape Town because of all the conjestion and traffic on the highway to the airport.  @pinkhairgirl sms’d me and asked if they could visit for the day.  I suggested they sleep over rather, since it is a fair distance to drive for one day, and I know that kids don’t really enjoy long car journeys.

And so the first official Badplaas Tweet-up happened.  It started on Friday night and ended about Sunday lunch time.  I’m guessing this might be the longest ever Tweet-up too :P

Here are some photographs from our weekend.

Birthday Tweet-up

February 21, 2010

Today was the “High Tea with the Queen” Tweet-up at Irene Country Lodge.  There were a few cancellations, but those of us who were there had a fabulous time well into the afternoon.

Thank you so much to @AngelsMind, @glugster, @louisabouwer, @pinkhairgirl and @jenty for making the effort.  It was wonderful having you all there.  It was the first time I’d met @louisabouwer and her gorgeous baby girl.  @AngelsMind brought along my birthday cupcakes, which were absolutely divine as always and thoroughly enjoyed by all.  @jenty had a newborn shoot in the morning but still made the effort, for which I am very grateful.

The kids all had a wonderful time running around and feeding the swan and geese. Here are a few pics from our morning

It has been a while since my last blog post.  So much has been happening and I’ve been struggling just to keep up.  I will keep you updated as I go.  But for now let me backtrack.

On the 30th January 2010 I photographed my cousins wedding in Cape Town.  I cannot share any photos of that event with you yet as she requested that I post nothing to the web without prior approval from her.

What I can share with you are photographs of my Tweet up and of @acidicice’s maternity shoot.  There are quite a few photographs that I will share and so I will divide it up into 2 separate posts.

So for now here are some photographs of HRH @queenofcomplex having dinner with “her subjects” in Cape Town.  I must tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed meeting each and every one of you.  You are even more awesome IRL and I’m so honoured that you made the effort to come out and meet me.  From the bottom of my heart I’d like to say THANK YOU for your time, your kindness and caring.  You are an incredibly special bunch of people and I’m extremely pleased I joined Twitter and met all of you.

Oh and I’m really sorry that I have to mention this – but since I tout myself as a photographer I cannot have sub standard work on this blog and take credit for it.  I allowed @andrevr to use my camera (Canon) to take photographs of me with all the great Cape Town folk.  Sadly it appears that his excellent knowledge of Nikon did not prepare him for the complex and superior workings of Canon – hence the blur and “extra ambiance” in some of the shots.  “Jammer Koosie, maar dié taak het jy gepluk”.  But in all fairness, let me point you to his most awesome and incredible work as a landscape photographer. I learnt bucket loads from him regarding landscape photography and am truly honoured to have worked with “the master”.

You can see the rest of the photographs from the tweet up here on my flickr stream.

Yesterday, despite feeling particularly grim, I took my son to Irene Country Lodge.  This is where I plan to have the Tweetup for my belated birthday celebrations.  Joshua loves going there.  He loves the scones, there is an old wagon to play on and he can run around on the ample grass and feed the geese.

There were 4 geese that we found particularly entertaining.  They “played” with Joshua – chasing him to get the bread he had in his hand.  I was very impressed, they are quite gentle when they take the bread and they were not aggressive at all, just interested in the bread.

I usually buy a loaf of bread the day before and then take it with us.  He gets so much joy out of feeding the fish and the geese.  There are monster sized catfish in the dam and when you start tossing bread into the water for the geese they come up to the surface as well.  It is most entertaining to watch the geese and the fish fight over the pieces of bread.  Joshua was in fits of laughter the whole time.

We’ll normally have our scones and tea first.  Some geese will come to the table if they think you may have food for them.  After we’ve finished we’ll start to feed the fish and geese.  We always go for a walk around the dam, and the geese and swans follow us around.  His “revenge” for them chasing him was to stand on the bench and make the geese stretch up onto almost tip toes to get the bread.  This worked until the swan got out the water.  I’ve never realised just how long their neck really is.

It was a lovely morning and we had a great time.

Project 365

January 13, 2010

I have very ambitiously started a “Project 365″.  I will attempt to take a photograph every single day this year.  You can see these photos HERE.  As with this blog, please feel free to leave comments, I enjoy reading them all, no matter what you have to say.

Christmas Day Celebrations

December 27, 2009

Christmas was very different from the norm for me this year. I did not spend it with family. Instead my son and I went to the bf in Badplaas. The bf’’s daughters joined us in Badplaas. The youngest was just a barrel of fun and got us properly into the Christmas spirit by pouring us “kersboompies”. Yes it was as hectic as it sounds. She found apple sours, which is green, and cherry sours, which is red and poured a shot of each into glasses. We were then instructed to pour them both into our mouth and shake our heads vigorously and then swallow. My goodness, it was a head rush of note. The vigorous shaking of our heads didn’t do much to keep us perched on our bar stools either. But it was loads of fun, we had good laughs and eventually got to bed at 01h30 Christmas morning.

My son woke at the crack of dawn, extremely excited that Father Christmas had actually found him and delivered his presents. After our Christmas Eve celebrations I was in no mood to get up, but I couldn’t disappoint my little man. He was totally spoilt. He’d asked Father Christmas for a remote controlled front end loader – which he got. The bf really went totally overboard and bought him a Scalextric set. It was so sweet to watch. He was so excited he could hardly contain himself and was jumping up and down like the energizer bunny. My saving grace though was that I had bought him Ice Age 3 on dvd. We had to charge the batteries for the front end loader (mercifully) and so the next best thing to do was to watch the dvd – with earphones on! I told him I had no clue how to put the Scalextric set together. I was lucky enough to score another hours sleep before having to get up and prepare for the Christmas lunch.

Joy beyond words when opening gifts

Christmas lunch was superb. The restaurant staff cooked and we took full advantage. I could totally get used to sitting outside enjoying some wine, and then being told lunch is ready and going into the restaurant and sitting down to a 3 course meal. The food was divine, and we ate our fill. Such a bonus – I didn’t even have to do dishes!!

After lunch the bf went to have an afternoon nap. Thank goodness, because he was not in a totally fabulous mood the morning, after the night before. The girls and I took our kids to the pool. Again much fun was had with pushing each other under water, giving each other “wedgies” and just generally fooling around. When the sun was setting daughter no 3 and I put together a few of the leftovers and took it to the pool where we all sat and carried on eating, drinking and having a totally rocking time.
